Re: Need help setting up VSAN. Zero capacity vsanDatastore.

Unfortunately vSAN requires unformatted drives to be used for vSAN (either for cache-tier or capacity-tier).

"Problem

When you attempt to configure either Virtual SAN or virtual flash resource, a local SSD disk does not appear on the list of disks to be used.

Cause

This problem might occur when a local SSD intended for use with either feature has been already formatted with VMFS. Neither Virtual SAN nor virtual flash can share the SSD disk with VMFS or any other file system."

https://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-55/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.vsphere.troubleshooting.doc%2FGUID-A17F5D39-C1F3-47B1-9645-5C247412F370.html

(5.5 Doc but the it is the same in 6..0 & 6.5)

You can verify that there is a partition on the device by connecting to the host via SSH (with PuTTy or similar):

# cd/dev/disks

# ls -lah

You will see drives with partitions like this:

naa.6000eb603c54216e7c613ac3a221ee2c

naa.6000eb603c54216e7c613ac3a221ee2c:1   <<<partition

vSAN-formatted disks will have 2 partitions.

So yes you will require another location for ESXi installation, Do your servers have internal SD card slots that could be used for this function?

Booting over network-attached storage is another option.

Or as you said, an additional smaller driver attached locally.

Re: cannot share host folders with Linux guest

Yogesh S N from VMware support called; we opened a shared session and got it working. The steps were:

  * sudo yum remove open-vm-tools

  * sudo yum install gcc-c++.x86_64

  * sudo rm -fr /etc/vmware-tools

  * install VMware tools from CD-ROM (as usual)

We do not understand why /etc/vmware-tools remained, and it was what caused the failure when I tried this earlier. Removing it got the VMware tools to install from CD-ROM, and they work.

Thanks to VMware support for a timely and successful resolution of this problem!

Thank you so much. It was indeed the solution.

Please note also that I had to perform the following steps:

sudo apt-get install gcc

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-4.9.0-2-amd64

reboot the computer

sudo apt-get install make

chmod u+x VMware-Player-12.5.3-5115892.x86_64.bundle

sudo ./VMware-Player-12.5.3-5115892.x86_64.bundle

Hi, from which version to which version are you upgrading your NSX manager?
Double check the md5 make sure your upgrade bundle does not corrupt.

Could you console and log in to the NSX Manager and see what version it is currently running on?
Once the upgrade complete, the NSX manager should be automatically restarted (at least that what I see in my environment).

Re: VSAN: compute-only and storage-only node

Similar to ESXi, vSAN licenses are required on a per-CPU basis so this will apply regardless of whether the hosts are contributing storage capacity to the vsandatastore or not.

"Virtual SAN Standard, Advanced, and Enterprise editions are licensed per-CPU (socket). These

are standalone licenses (i.e. not included with any other VMware license such as VMware

vSphere®, vSphere with Operations Management™, VMware vCloud Suite®, and so on)."

https://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/products/vsan/vmware-vsan-62-licensing-guide.pdf

As an aside, there is no way to configure vSAN nodes as "storage-only" (can be "compute-only" though of course).

After I moved VM to 6.0U2 i then UPGRADED VMware tools. It was showing (out of date) status.

Now VM is showing tools status: RUNNING (CURRENT)

Could you please clarify what you meant when you said "try it?"

Thanks in advance...

Looks like you got father than most.

I just tried to make a simple install. As the VM is building it just seems to crash. My guess is that iso that is made by vmware studio to kick off the install is not good. It uses it's own grub vmdk which is probably all the legacy grub vs grub2.

In the debug log you can see

Archive: /opt/vmware/share/build/vmdk/grubvmdk.zip

inflating: grub.vmdk

inflating: grub-flat.vmdk

which is used to create the provstart iso. I think we are doomed from there.

Re: Inconsistent and slow logins with any version of Appvolumes

Hey Ray -

I ran into a problem with an older stack of mine this last week and ended up resolving it by mounting an "update" of the vmdk to a VM without the appvol agent installed and copying files from the latest template into the screwy app stack.  Long story short, and to tie it to this thread, it also noticeably sped up mount/logon.

I remember asking Jason Marshall a long time ago for a true "upgrade" function in the GUI to insert these newer files into existing stacks, when I was thinking of versioning for stacks being integrated.  I could swear he said that was something they were working on, but I never saw it materialize.

Unfortunately, it's not possible (so far as I know) to see easily what version of a template was used for each stack.  I only see what agent version was used.

Just throwing this out there, since in an earlier reply you noted that you have several older stacks.  With 2.12.1 just around the corner, though, I'm going to wait until that template is available to do anything further (since it includes the virtual printer fix).

Unfortunately  we use VCSA, so I could easy  remove Network & Security Plugin in  MOB, but can't  remove the ESX agent manager service.

That  .UninstallApp-NT.bat is available in Windows. Could not find any useful info on Google.

Actually I managed to remove eam(ESX Agent Manager) RPM file but service is still showing ( not running)

NFS 4.1 tests in Storage Certification 6.0 fails on any tests involving VM

0

Hello,

I have been running some NFS 4.1 related tests on our test bed, and am getting an exception that is preventing those tests to perform properly.

Some of the tests affected are: NFS41_VmRebootSnapshot_AuthSys, NFS41_VMRebootSuspendResume_AuthSys, NFS41_VMClone_Authsys

Whenever those tests run, it gets to the point where a new VM is successfully cloned to the NFS 4.1 datastore and powers on, waits for VMware Tools heartbeat, and then tries to trigger the IO process. Then it logs an exception like this:

I am currently running VMware Workbench 3.5.7 with Storage Cert 6.0 latest build available installed. The test bed is using two ESXi 6.0 GA build hosts, added to vCenter and Workbench using IP address per the Storage Cert 6.0 release notes.

Anyone else ran into this problem?

Upgrade from 5.1 to 6

I am going to be performing an upgrade on two servers from 5.1 to 6.0, one is a Lenovo the other an older Dell T310. I found a custom ISO for Lenovo for 6.0U2 but there are no custom Dell ISO's and I cannot find a standard ESXi 6.0U2 ISO, only 6.0U3. Should I install the customer 6.0U2 on the Lenovo and the standard 6.0U3 on the Dell? I use veeam to replicate VM's from the Lenovo to the Dell, I assume the fact that there is an update difference between them shouldn't make any different to the guest VM's or be that big a deal?

Cool!  Glad to hear that things are working.

Please do an "sudo apt-get install linux-headers-amd64" as well... installing that meta-package will ensure that you receive the correct headers along with any future kernel updates too.

Cheers,

So I went and bought a 64GB thumbdrive and reinstalled ESXI to the thumbdrive.  I noticed that it did not create a datastore on the thumb drive into which I can install the vCenter Server Appliance.  It also won't allow me to manually create a datastore on the thumbdrive.  Is it not possible to create a datastore on a thumb drive?  Can I fool ESXI into thinking that the thumbdrive is in fact "persistent" storage?  The thumbdrive would actually be pretty persistent since I plugged it into a USB port inside the chassis of the host.  No one will pull this thing out unless they crack open the machine.

if you are using storage array based replication. nothing you need to do.

In 6.5, go to Monitor->Tasks & Events -> Scheduled Tasks->Schedule a new task

In 6.0, it is under the Manage tab.
