iSCSI HBA vs Ethernet Connections

$

Hello,

I am experiencing a strange issue with my ESXi node. I am running ESXi 5.1 U2 on a DL680c G7 blade. I have also 2x HP VC Flex-10 modules, that provide Internet, NFS and dual path iSCSI traffic to the blade. I have configured the following connections/networks:

Internet: VCBay1 port4 - VCBay2 port4

NFS:     VCbay1 port5 - VCBay2-port5

iSCSI_1: VCbay1 - port2 - VCBay2-port2 (DAC cables)

iSCSI_2: VCbay1 - port3 - VCBay2-port3 (DAC cables)

So I assign to the server profile the above. When I assign ALL of them to the Ethernet connections, my ESXi "sees" the correct number of NICs: 2x 10G for Internet, 1x for NFS and 2x for iSCSI. If i reconfigure the profile and assign ALL to Ethernet connections except of iSCSI, where I configure them as 2x iSCSI HBA Connections, ESXi sees only 1x 10g NIC.

My questions are:

1. Is it correct to assign to Ethernet Networks in VC-Flex10 the ports that are connected to storage systems (dual path 3PAR-10g iSCSI DirectAttach)?

2. Why does ESXi see the correct number of NICs when I configure every Flex10 network as Ethernet Network Connectin?

Thank you for your time.

Yes, the 3PAR 7000 series (which means mondels 7200 and 7400) are compatible. I have figured it out anyway. I needed 2x VMkernel ports, each VMk port to one of the 2 iSCSI paths.

Thank you.

Hello

After each failed installation attempt.

1. Delete the database

2.create new database

3. Uninstall the failed vCAC install

4. unbind port 443

5. Reconfirm the IIS settings

6 run the asp_net command for .net 4.5

reboot the machine and then it fails the install again.

I followed grandorchard and Kendrick Coleman install process.  I wish that would have

worked for me.

It is exasperating that this install is this tricky.

I detailed every step for the instal in my original post....just don't get  why it is failing.

I have 3 clusters going through the load balancer.

vCAC Appliance

vcac1 and vcac2  (vcloud.pslab.internal)

Website/Model Manager

iaas1 and iaas2  (vcacweb.pslab.internal)

Manager Service/DEM Orchestrator

vcacdem1 and vcacdem2 (vcacmgr.pslab.internal)

I created 3 certs

vcloud.pslab.internal

vcacweb.pslab.internal

vcacmgr.pslab.internal

Imported vcacweb.pslab.internal into IIS.  Could the cert cause this issue?

Saw this on another blog. Same error./issue I am dealing with.

“Building Project “C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\vCAC\Server\Model Manager Data\DeployRepository.xml” (VARegistrationFinalSteps target(s)) — FAILED.

Build FAILED.

Authentication issue

this error occurs when either the username or password supplied to iis is invalid

Any idea to address how the username or password supplied to iis is invalid?

Thanks for your answer. I will do that and post my results.

For the raid we are unsure if the disks are really broken as none of them is marked as fail (red).

We have virtual machines on both raids so I don't want to risk data loss by enabling the raid until I have a backup of all 3 disks (dd image).

Unfortunately we don't have any external backup.

Yep, now that the DNS blip is away it seems to have been fixed. So, as usual the lesson is - make sure DNS forward and reverse is working pristinely.

Problem with video for "VMware vSphere Hypervisor – Install & Configure"

Hello,

In this page: https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/evalcenter?lp=default&p=free-esxi5

when we click on the "Installation & configuration" tab, we have access to some videos for vSphere Hypervisor.

But at this moment, none of the video can be shown.  I have tried this in my home computer as well as my company computer and none works.

Someone working for VMware please check this issue.

Thanks

Poor performance of storage vmotion to one datastore only

Hi Community

First, let me give you a brief overview of our small infrastructure:

1 x HP Enclosure C7000

6 x HP BL460 G7/Gen8 blades with ESXi 5.1

1 x HP BL 460 G7 with Windows 2008 R2

2 x HP B-Series 8/24 switches

1 x HP P2000 G3 FC Dual Controllers

Here is the story - about 4 weeks ago one of the controllers in our MSA failed.  During the replacement of the controller we had issues when both controllers believed their were owners of vdisks.

Once the controller was replaced I noticed very poor performance during the storage vmotion to one particular datastore.

On the MSA we have two vdisks with 10K drives:

vdisk-1 -    16 x 600GB 10K disks in RAID6

vdisk-2 -    8  x 600GB 10K disks in RAID6

Both vdisks are owned by the new controller and each contains one datastore.

When i move VM from vdisk 1 to vdisk 2 it works as expected.I can see about 150-200 MB/s rate.

However, when I move the VM in the opposite direction, from vdisk 2 to vdisk 1 it takes 5 times longer and the latency goes really high, up to 1000ms and throughput is about 30MB/s.

In my opinion there are some issues with Write IOs on vdisk-1.

The problem started right after the controller was replaced. Therefore, I first blamed HP. I have also double checked everything I could remember - SAN cabling and zoning, ALUA, VAAI plugins, but results are the same. MSA log has no errors/warnings.

However, when I presented two new volumes, one from each vdisk, to the blade server running Windows and I have had no performance problems there copying files both directions.

I have also shutdown the new controller to fail over all vdisks to the second controller, but that didn't resolve the performance problem.

HP Support couldn't find anything wrong with the storage. With all that in mind it is very probably that the storage is just fine and there are some issues with vSphere.

We have another couple of  vdisks on the same MSA owned by the second controller and with numerous volumes presented to ESXi hosts. Storage VMotion works fine on them.

To be honest I ran out of ideas and I will really apreciate any tips on where to look for the cause of the problem.

Thanks.

Just a few thoughts, since I'm not very familiar with the MSA.

  • did you run esxtop to find out whether the latency is kernel or device related (see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1008205)?
  • do all the LUNs on the MSA have write-back cache enabled?
  • how did you do the Windows copy tests? Other than ESXi, Windows uses OS based caching, so you may want to use tools like iometer for testing..

Workspace login error in Firefox 28

When I try to log in to my Horizon Workspace through Mozilla Firefox 28. I see only "Signing in" label.  After 3-4minutes I obtain error page "502 Bad Gateway - The server returned an invalid or incomplete response".

When I use Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Opera in newest versions, everything works fine. I am logged in in a few seconds.

Horizon Workspace version is 1.8.0.1800 Build 1653313, and operating system with internet browsers is Windows 7 SP1 64bit.

Any suggestions what is wrong?

thanks for prompt reply Andre

  • Yes. I did, but with VAAI plugin install and VAAI enabled you cannot trust DAVG/s, KAVG/s. Need to run it on the host with uninstalled VAAI plugin
  • Yes, all of them have write-back cache enabled. When I set it to write-through the write rate on the storage during the storage vmotion drops to 2MB/s!
  • I did simple copy-paste and could that went really fast, more than 150MB/s

The most annoying is that it is only one vdisk impacted by this problem and only Write IOs.

Storage space for my virtual disks

I have a virtual machine with 2 disks, 40 GB each. All .vmdk files occupy 324 GB and there are 2.750 .vmdk files.

I've defragmented and cleaned up the disks.

What can I do to reduce the storage space used by the .vmdk files?. Or this ratio 324/80 is valid?.

Setting LUN display name (programatically, for host and vcenter)

$

Hi,

The goal: Having meaningful display names in vCenter.

How I try to accomplish this: using esxcli on the individual host.

~ # esxcli storage core device list -d naa.600000e00d100000001030XXXXbc0000
naa.600000e00d100000001030XXXbc0000   Display Name: FUJITSU Fibre Channel Disk (naa.600000e00d100000001030XXXXbc0000)   Has Settable Display Name: true
...

~ # esxcli storage core device set -d naa.600000e00d100000001030XXXbc0000 -n LUN.naa.600000e00d100000001030XXXbc0000

~ # esxcli storage core device list -d naa.600000e00d100000001030XXXbc0000
naa.600000e00d100000001030XXXbc0000   Display Name: LUN.naa.600000e00d100000001030XXXbc0000   Has Settable Display Name: true

... (a few seconds later) ...

~ # esxcli storage core device list -d naa.600000e00d100000001030XXXXbc0000
naa.600000e00d100000001030XXXbc0000   Display Name: FUJITSU Fibre Channel Disk (naa.600000e00d100000001030XXXbc0000)   Has Settable Display Name: true

Why does it revert to the previous device name almost instantly?

Oh, and I also want to show the updated device names in vCenter.

I don't want to go and click through every device on each host in vCenter in order to give the LUNs meaningful names.

I want to set them programatically.

Best regards,

Marki

Just an update. The above fix unfortunately did not work in my case.

I ended up installing a fresh image of 2008 R2, then making sure that I installed IIS before installing .NET. (I believe this was the key).

After that I ran the PS script from Kedrick Coleman, and executed the installer after confirming that the prereq check was all green.

The install went through without a hitch this time.

OK forget it, probably you have to do this through vcenter... I guess I'll use PowerCLI or better vCLI as I don't want to use PowerShell.
