Hello!

I was running ESXi5.1 before and did not notice any issues, now I had upgraded to ESXi5.5 U2 and applied the latest patches.

Starting with that I continuously get the puriple screen of death with en exception 14 pointing to E1000TxTSOSend E1000PollTxRing.

There is an error regards the Rx side, like you see mine crashes on the Transmitting (Tx) side, ...

VMware KB: VMware ESXi 5.x host experiences a purple diagnostic screen mentioning E1000PollRxRing and E1000DevRx

I run OSX10.9.2 (Server) on a 2011 MacMin(5,3) 16gb, 120gbSSD+750gbHD with ESXi5.5U1.

There is some article about problems with E1000 (but 5.1) and adjusting some parameters,

VMware KB:    Hosts with virtual machines using the E1000/E1000E adapter have networking issues after upgrading to ESXi…

I tried that (only one exists anyhow in 5.5) but it not help neither.

There are some other options maybe checking them out could be worth trying.

Btw, I noticed that the new (patch is out VMware KB: VMware ESXi 5.5, Patch Release ESXi550-201404001

Though it does not look it would address any network driver related stuff.

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64 bit in Workstation 6.5 : Tools fails to install

Hello,

I installed Ubuntu 14.05 LTS in a Workstation 6.5.5 build-328052 (64 bits).

It works fine328052.tar.gz) fails to install.

The error message is

The following VMware kernel modules have been found on your system that were

not installed by the VMware Installer. Please remove them then run

this installer again.

vmci

Ubuntu installation is just a plain fresh installation. Nothing installed, all default selected during install.

Any idea how to solve this?

Thanks.

Francois

>>> Could it be because the LUN is already formatted as I used it previously?

After deleting the datastore (i.e. deleted the VMFS partition on the LUN) it should become available again for creating a new datastore on it.

Thinking about it I have tried it directly on the host and had the same issue.

I had another issue before this one where I had to expand storage directly on a host as it did not work from vCenter.

Ubuntu 14.04 is not an officially supported Guest OS in VMware Workstation 6.x and the latest release of Ubuntu that is officially supported in VMware Workstation 6.x is Ubuntu 9.0.4.  Unless you can find some third-party patch then you might be out of luck.  As a matter of fact, at the present time with VMware Workstation, Ubuntu 14.04 is only officially supported in VMware Workstation 10.0.2.

FreeBSD support in VMWare Fusion

Any ideas on what the story is about FreeBSD support in VMWare? At best it seems spotty. For instance, the VMWare Tools do not build at all on FreeBSD 10 and even if they do, they use an old compatibility layer. On top of that, the compatibility page does not seem to have updated to show FreeBSD as a supported Guest OS for VMWare Fusion 6. I was interested FreeBSD with vagrant and they seem to support VMWare Fusion. It seem like Virtual Box might be a better option and their support of FreeBSD looks decent, but they don't seem to support shared folders, so that's not great either.

Re: update manager connecting through the my proxy

Hi Kweli,

there is nothing special in proxy configuration at VUM we using it and everything works fine....which version of VUM are you using?

Sometimes the GUI does not tell the truth, can you check proxy setting in VUM config file here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Vmware\Infrastructure\Update Manager\vci-integrity.xml

Look for:

<proxySettings>

   <useProxyServer>true</useProxyServer>

<proxyServer>name or IP address of the proxy server</proxyServer>

<proxyPort>port number of the proxy server</proxyPort>

</proxySettings>

There shouldn't be any http/https:// prefixes in <proxyServer> field ....

Also check proxy settings in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc.\VMware Update Manager\Proxy

If all the settings are correct look at the VUM log here:

C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Logs\

You can also try for troubleshooting purposes enable trivia logging for VUM see:

Recently, VMWare Fusion began suspending itself.  It happened with 6.0.2 and now with 6.0.3.

I am using Fusion/Windows 8.1 in an iMac with OS X 10.9.2.

How can I stop Fusion from suspending?

Thanks Ilian. That was helpful. I was able to use CatalogService to get the object, I needed.

Moving hosts between EVC enabled clusters (from 4.1 to 5.5)

Hi All,

It is my first post here on communities and I hope it will be a great time

Currently we are running a single production cluster (vCenter 4.1U3a) made of 10 IBM x3850 X5 hosts where:

  • 5 hosts have Intel X7560 CPUs (ESXi 4.1U3)
  • 5 hosts have Intel E7-8837 CPUs (ESXi 4.1U3)

Cluster is EVC enabled: Nehalem Gen. (Xeon Core i7)

We now have to move whole cluster from existing 4.1U3a vCenter to a new 5.5U1 vCenter without VMs downtime (we cannot touch/upgrade old vCenter). Would it be possible? Correct me if I am wrong but I would like to do it this way:

  1. Disable HA and DRS on 4.1U3a Cluster (leave EVC as it is)
  2. Disconnect hosts from 4.1U3a Cluster (one by one)
  3. Once all hosts are disconnected remove hosts from the 4.1U3a cluster (one by one)
  4. Create new Cluster on 5.5U1 vCenter
  5. Enable EVC on the new Cluster on 5.5U1 vCenter (and set it to Nehalem Gen. (Xeon Core i7) as it was on old 4.1U3a vCenter)
  6. Add host to 5.5U1 vCenter, outside the new cluster (on the Datacenter level)
  7. Move newly added host to the new EVC enabled Cluster on 5.5U1 vCenter
  8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 for all remaining hosts
  9. Enable HA and DRS on new Cluster on 5.5U1 vCenter
  10. Test vMotion from and to each ESXi (and pray it works)

Would this plan work? I was testing this on Lab environment and it seemed OK but I am afraid I missed something. As far as I understand EVC it should work as long as I am not going to power cycle any VM during the hosts "move".

Thank you all for your help.

VMware ESXi5.5-1474528 and iSCSI not starting on boot.

I have two ESXi 5.5 1474528 build VM machines (Dell CS-24TY).  Both are connected using software iscsi controller to a Promise iSCSI RAID.

The setup works almost flawlessly ... Almost, because neither will automount the iSCSI on boot.

In both cases, I have to manually mount using esxcfg-volume -m <UUID> ... after that, they work without any issues.

Any help? Suggestions?

I had a look at the upgrade page at VMware website. It seems that Workstation 6 cannot be upgraded to Workstation 10 (The page talk about upgrading Workstation 8 or 9, and Player 6). Does this means I have to buy a new licence at the full price?

Having some trouble Virtualizing a Physical Machine

I am trying to virtualize a physical machine (my PC) for class and it is not working. When I get the login to the Physical Machine prompt, I enter the IP address, my host name and my password and it keeps telling me that the info I have entered is incorrect. I am running Windows 8.1 so hopefully that isn't the reason I am having so much trouble. Also, I have the UAC turned off as instructed. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!
